Birch Ave. Attic Fire
Posted On: Nov 29, 2021
Just before 6 p.m. on Sunday November, 28th, Local members responded to a house fire on Birch Avenue in Unincorporated Douglas County. Members from first arriving Engine 44 observed smoke coming from the structure and confirmed with the homeowner that all occupants were outside and safe. A hose line was stretched to the interior where members using thermal imaging cameras observed high heat signatures above the ceiling and started opening it up with hand tools. The crew described the fire conditions, “like a blow torch flowing across the attic space.” While members on the interior aggressively worked to extinguish the flames, additional crews were on the roof conducting vertical ventilation. Chainsaws were used to cut holes in the roof, allowing the high heat and smoke to escape and improve visibility for the crews working inside.
To complicate matters, this subdivision is one of many in South Metro’s District that doesn’t have fire hydrants. To overcome this challenge, 6 Water Tenders responded to the scene, each carrying 3,000 gallons of water. Because of the quick action of the crews, this fire was quickly placed under control and the additional water resources were not needed. No injuries occurred and Investigators determined the fire was accidental, caused by faulty electrical wiring. Thank you to Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Franktown Fire Protection District for assisting.
