Riverscape Ct. Structure Fire
Posted On: Jul 07, 2020

At 3:41 p.m. on Monday July 6, 2020, Local 2086 and 1309 members responded to a reported construction site on fire with heavy fire/smoke conditions present and people with injuries near the intersection of Riverscape Ct. & Channel Dr. in Unincorporated Douglas County. When Battalion Chief 1 arrived on scene, he found multiple three story wood frame buildings fully engulfed in flames with fire extension to the south in the brush behind the structures next to the Highline Canal Trail. Multiple people called in to report the large plume of black smoke coming from the scene. With four structures on fire and beginning to collapse along with an additional wildland response needed for the brush fire making a jump across the canal path, BC1 called for a second alarm - bringing double the amount of units to the scene’s staging area.  Members attacked the large amount of fire from the outside of the structures using aerial master streams from above, blitz fire hose lines on the ground and hand lines along the trail and next to the structures. Crews were able to gain control of the fire and monitored for hot spots. Later on in the evening, members returned to the scene due to wind blowing embers on the ground and into the treetops along the Highline Canal. Members stayed overnight on Monday and will continue to monitor the scene into Tuesday morning. The fire caused major damage to four structures and partial damage to a fifth structure. Members transported two construction workers to the hospital in stable condition with minor burn injuries. South Metro Fire Investigators determined the cause of the fire was accidental due to the use of flammable liquids during construction work. Thank you to Douglas County Sheriffs Office and Arapahoe Rescue Patrol, Inc. for your support on this incident.
