Littleton High School HazMat
Posted On: Sep 21, 2020

On Thursday September 10, 2020, Local members responded to a hazmat investigation at Littleton High School located on E. Littleton Blvd. in the city of Littleton. Initial reports stated there was an odor of chlorine in the pool area of the school and the custodial staff was inside at the time. When members arrived on scene, they made contact with a person who had inhaled the chlorine odor inside the school. That person was treated and taken to the hospital. Further investigation showed a tube system in the pool control area containing chlorine and muriatic acid, aka hydrochloric acid, was charged but the valve wasn’t open and the gaseous substance leaked into the pool area.  Members from the Hazmat Team responded to the scene and created a plan to enter the school safely, isolate and mitigate the gaseous substance and ventilate the impacted area. In the meantime, the building was evacuated and the HVAC system was shut down. Members put on level A hazmat suits and created an entry team to go into the school. Once inside, the team read and recorded the levels of the substance in the air and mitigated the source. Luckily the gas did not extend to other areas of the building. Crews remained on scene late into the evening to ventilate the structure and decontaminate their gear.
