At 1:58 p.m. on Thursday February 2, 2021, Local members responded to a vehicle collision involving a structure at 8127 S. Norfolk Street in unincorporated Arapahoe County. When members arrived, they found a sedan embedded in the corner of the garage and a free-flowing natural gas leak from the damaged meter. The driver and only occupant of the vehicle was removed to a safe location, evaluated by paramedics and transported to the hospital. Members searched the involved house and evacuated the neighboring homes. An attack hose line was stretched in case anything ignited and members were able to significantly slow the gas leak. Major structural damage occurred, and members of the Technical Rescue Team placed emergency shoring in the garage to prevent a collapse. Once the vehicle was towed, Xcel Energy removed the meter and fully controlled the natural gas leak. With the working environment safer, members removed more of the damaged structure and placed additional shoring to prevent a collapse.
