June 14th - The afternoon was busy for both Local 2086 and 1309 members, battling multiple fires including a garage fire and a commercial fire back-to-back. The garage fire was located near W. Geddes Place and W. Glasgow Place in Jefferson County. The initial 911 call described a garage full of flames, while a secondary caller confirmed the flames and added that there was a lot of black smoke that could be seen miles away. Members initially pulled their 2 1/2" line and worked off of tank water until a water supply was established. A 360 safety walk was conducted along with primary searches to ensure people and pets were evacuated. Crews were able to contain the fire to the garage without extension into the home.
911 calls then were received from people in the area stating that there was heavy black smoke near Chatfield Reservoir. The fire was located at a cement pipe factory near Santa Fe Drive. Members found a front-end loader that was fully-involved and the fire was extending into an outbuilding. Initial concerns were that the outbuilding fire could then extend to the interior of the facility. Members utilized a split lay from Tower 18 and then Engine 40 continued the 5" to the hydrant. Crews also confirmed that the building was unoccupied. Although no injuries were reported, crews battled dehydration working both fires in the hot weather. Both fire investigations are being handled by the SMFR Fire Marshal's Office.
